How many nesting boxes do you need?
Plan on one nesting box for every three to four hens. Hens share, and no matter how many boxes you give them, most of the flock will pile into the same favorite one anyway, so extra boxes past that ratio just take up coop space. Each box should be about 12 by 12 inches for standard breeds. A flock of six or eight hens needs only two boxes; ten to twelve hens need three.

Nesting box questions
How many nesting boxes per chicken?
One box for every three to four hens. You don't need one per bird. Hens share boxes and tend to crowd into the same one or two favorites regardless, so building more than the ratio calls for just wastes space.
Will more nesting boxes mean more eggs?
No. Egg production comes down to breed, age, daylight, feed, and health, not the number of boxes. Extra boxes past the one-per-three-to-four ratio won't add a single egg, they just get used for lounging or ignored.
How big should a nesting box be?
About 12 by 12 inches, and 12 inches deep, for standard-size breeds like Buff Orpingtons or Rhode Island Reds. Big enough for a hen to settle in and turn around, snug enough to feel safe. Larger breeds can use a slightly bigger box.
How high off the ground should nesting boxes be?
Set the boxes lower than the roosting bars, usually one to two feet off the floor. Hens want to sleep up high on the roost and lay down low, so keeping the boxes below the roost discourages them from sleeping, and pooping, in the boxes.
