Sizing your coop is critical
A general guideline is 10–15 square feet of outdoor run space per chicken. A flock of 10 should have 100–150 square feet to move, forage, and behave naturally. Proper spacing reduces stress, minimizes aggression, and supports flock health. Coop space can be more compact — chickens mostly use the coop to roost and shelter at night — so we plan for about 2 square feet per bird inside.

Predator-proof by design
Predator protection is one of the most important elements of a properly built coop, especially in areas with active wildlife. Every Triano Farms coop is designed with layered defenses that stop predators before they ever reach your flock.
- A 2-foot-wide hardware-cloth skirt laid at ground level around the entire perimeter, stopping raccoons, foxes, and coyotes from digging underneath.
- All runs and windows enclosed in ½" PVC-coated hardware cloth — far stronger than chicken wire, and resistant to rust, chewing, and bending.
- Layered defense against climbing, digging, and squeezing predators, without giving up airflow or visibility.
- A secure, long-term solution that keeps birds safe day and night — without compromising durability, function, or looks.

Sloped or unprepared lot?
Most sites just need blocks to reach grade — but if yours needs real grading, clearing, or a pad, we work with JWSR LLC for excavation, site prep, and utility trenching across New Jersey, so the ground is ready before we build.
Chicken coop FAQs
How long does it take to build a chicken coop?
The typical lead time is about 2 weeks after we receive your order. A heavier backlog can affect that timeline.
When laying the predator skirt, do you bury it?
We can. Most customers prefer to do their own landscaping over it — rock gardens or mulch beds over the skirt are a popular look. Buried or not, the skirt still provides full protection.
Do you build on uneven ground?
We assess the area and either add blocks to reach grade or bring in our contractors to level it. Setting the coop on blocks does not affect security — the predator skirt still provides full protection.
Can I customize size, color, and features?
Yes. This is your world and we are here to bring your vision to life. Many customers match the coop to their home's color scheme to tie everything together.
Do I need a permit for a chicken coop in NJ?
It depends on size. In NJ, coops are treated like sheds. Most temporary (non-permanent) structures under 200 sq ft do not require a permit. We assess your situation and take the necessary steps.
