Backyard homestead questions
How much does a backyard homestead cost?
It depends on what you include and how much of the property you develop. A simple starter homestead with a chicken coop, a small garden area, and basic fencing may run several thousand dollars, while a more complete setup with multiple animal shelters, larger enclosures, raised garden beds, fencing, and custom structures can easily reach $30,000 or more. We can build it in phases to spread that out.
How much land do I need for a small homestead?
You don't need a huge property. Many families build a productive setup on a quarter acre to one acre, depending on what they want to include. A half acre can comfortably support chickens, rabbits, raised beds, composting, and smaller livestock areas when the space is planned carefully.
What should I build first on a homestead?
Start with the part you'll use immediately, which for most families is a chicken coop and run, or a garden. It's important to think ahead about fencing, access, drainage, utilities, and future structures so your first project doesn't get in the way of later expansion. That's exactly the kind of layout planning we help with.
What animals are best for a small homestead?
Chickens and rabbits are some of the easiest to incorporate because they need relatively little space. Goats can work well on larger backyard properties when there's adequate shelter and fencing. The best mix depends on your space, your goals, local rules, and how much daily care you want to take on.
How much space do chickens, rabbits, and goats need?
For chickens, plan on about 4 square feet of indoor coop space per bird plus 8 to 15 square feet of outdoor run. Rabbits should have at least 8 to 12 square feet of enclosure each, with larger breeds needing more. Goats need about 15 to 20 square feet of covered shelter per adult, plus significantly more outdoor room for exercise and grazing. These are starting points; we size each area to your animals and property.
Can a homestead be built in phases?
Yes, and often that's the most practical way. You might start with a chicken coop and garden, then add rabbit housing, goat shelters, fencing, storage, or more growing areas as your needs change. The important part is having a larger plan from the beginning so each new phase fits naturally with what's already there.
Can you match all the structures so the property looks intentional?
Yes. We can coordinate siding, roofing, trim, colors, roof styles, doors, and hardware across the chicken coop, rabbit enclosures, goat shelters, and other structures, so your homestead reads as one designed property instead of a collection of unrelated buildings.
