We keep our own quail, so we build them the way we'd build them for ourselves. Quail are small, fast, and easy to lose to a predator that a chicken coop would shrug off. The details that keep them safe are different from a coop, and getting them right is the whole job.

Why so many people are switching to quail
Quail have quietly become the answer for people who want fresh eggs but can't, or don't want to, keep a full flock of chickens. They're not silent, but they're much quieter than a flock with a rooster and there's no dawn crowing, which helps them clear the noise rules that get roosters banned in most New Jersey towns. They lay early, often by six to eight weeks. And they need a fraction of the room, so a whole covey fits in a corner of a yard that would never hold a coop and run.
The catch is that their housing has to be right, because their margin for error is smaller than a chicken's. A gap that a hen would never fit through is an open door to a quail, and to the rat or snake hunting it. That's the part we build for.

Quail aviary questions
How is a quail enclosure different from a chicken coop?
Three things. Quail are small enough to slip through the half-inch hardware cloth we use on coops, and so are the snakes and rats that hunt them, so we drop to quarter-inch mesh. Quail flush straight up when spooked, so the ceiling is kept low or built with a soft top so they don't injure their heads. And quail live on the ground rather than roosting, so the floor plan and bedding matter more than perches.
Are quail legal where roosters aren't?
Often, yes, and it's one of the reasons people keep them. Quail aren't silent, but they're far quieter than chickens and there's no rooster's dawn crow, so they tend to slip under the noise rules that get roosters banned across most New Jersey towns. Local ordinances still vary, so check your town's rules the same way you would for chickens, but a quieter bird is an easier sell to a town and to neighbors.
How much space do quail need?
As a rule of thumb, plan on about one square foot of floor space per bird, more if you can give it. Quail are ground birds, so usable floor area matters more than height. We size every aviary to your covey and your yard, and we build in easy-clean access because quail are kept close to the ground where waste builds up fast.
How fast do quail start laying?
Fast. Coturnix quail, the most common backyard type, can start laying around six to eight weeks old, far quicker than chickens. That means a small aviary can be producing eggs within a couple of months, which is part of why quail have taken off with people who don't have room or town approval for a full flock of hens.
