What size chicken coop do you need?
As a rule, plan for about 2 to 4 square feet of coop space per hen, plus 8 to 15 square feet of outdoor run per bird. So 6 hens want roughly 15–24 sq ft of coop and a 60–90 sq ft run; 10 hens want about 25–40 sq ft of coop and a 100–150 sq ft run. Crowding causes stress, pecking, and disease, so err bigger.

The five numbers that matter
Coop (indoor) space
2–4 sq ft per hen. Smaller bantams need less; larger breeds and cold-climate flocks that spend more winter time inside need the higher end.
Run (outdoor) space
8–15 sq ft per hen. More room means less pecking, cleaner ground, and healthier birds. This is the number people most often underbuild.
Roost bar
8–12 inches of roost per hen, higher than the nesting boxes so they don't sleep (and poop) in the boxes.
Nesting boxes
One box per 3–4 hens. More boxes than that just go unused — hens share.
Ventilation
Air needs to move above the birds without drafting on them. Under-ventilated coops trap moisture and ammonia, which is how respiratory illness starts.

Can a coop be too big?
Not for the chickens — but a very large space is harder for a small flock to keep warm in a NJ winter. Match the coop to your flock and give the extra room in the run instead.
