How the sizing works
How do you calculate chicken coop size?
Multiply your flock by about 2–4 sq ft of coop space per bird and 8–15 sq ft of run per bird. So 6 standard hens need roughly 18 sq ft of coop and a 72 sq ft run. Bantams need less; free-ranging flocks need less run.
How much run space per chicken?
Plan 8–15 sq ft of run per hen if they don't free-range, or about half that if they get regular time out. More space means less pecking and healthier birds.
