Chicken coop ventilation, done right
Ventilation is the single most important thing for a healthy coop, more than warmth or insulation, and it matters most in winter. The goal is to move moisture and ammonia up and out through the roofline without blowing a draft across your roosting birds. Leave a couple of windows open year-round, and control drafts with tight door-to-framing overlap rather than by sealing the coop up. New owners get this backwards and close everything in winter, which traps moisture and causes frostbite and illness.
Why moisture, not cold, is the enemy
Chickens come with their own insulation. Their feathers and body heat handle a New Jersey winter better than most people expect. What they can't handle is damp. A flock breathing and dropping inside a closed-up coop puts a surprising amount of moisture into the air, and if that moisture has nowhere to go, it settles on combs, wattles, and feet as frostbite, and it feeds the kind of respiratory illness that spreads through a flock. Ventilation is simply how that moisture leaves. That's why we say airflow beats heat every time.
How we build ventilation in
- Windows open year-round. We suggest leaving a couple of windows open in every season, so there's always air moving through.
- Vent up high. Warm, moist, ammonia-heavy air rises, so the coop is built to let it escape near the roofline, above where the birds roost.
- Positive pressure. Close one set of windows and you create positive pressure inside the coop that pushes stale air and litter fumes up and out through the roof, instead of letting them hang in the air.
- Tight doors, not a sealed box. We trim around the inside framing so a closed door overlaps the frame with no gap. That kills drafts at the door without you having to seal the whole coop and choke off airflow.
- Deep litter that stays dry. Good airflow keeps the bedding dry, and dry bedding is what makes the deep-litter method work.

Do chicken coops need ventilation in winter?
Yes, more than any other time of year. This is the opposite of what most people think. Chickens handle cold fine with their feathers and body heat, but they can't handle damp.
